Rwanda is emerging as a hot destination for adventurous incentive groups looking to get off the beaten track and experience its stunning scenery and unique wildlife. A number of luxury accommodation openings are also helping boost its appeal, and we check out three of the best new options…
Opening this month (August ), Singita Kwitonda Lodge will offer eight luxury suites and a private four-bedroom villa called Kataza House, surrounded by a lush and misty landscape of forests and ancient volcanoes.
The lodge, named after a legendary silverback gorilla, is on the edge of Volcanoes National Park where more than one third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live, so gorilla trekking will naturally be one of the main attractions here. Craftspeople and artisans have been employed in the construction, as part of Singita’s goal to partner with local communities.
Wilderness Safaris’ newest luxury lodge Magashi Camp follows the launch of Bisate Lodge in 2017. Magashi Camp is situated in the north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park. Six spacious and airy tents offer uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga, while Magashi’s main area comprises a luxurious lounge, dining and bar area, pool, and expansive viewing deck with a convivial fire pit. The architecture and interiors pay homage to traditional Rwandan culture.
Akagera comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa – open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains – and is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, a healthy population of lion and black rhino (both recently reintroduced to the park) some very large crocodiles as well as well as the rare sitatunga and more than 520 bird species.
Set within the lush green expanse of a working tea plantation, alongside one of the largest and best-preserved mountain rainforests in Africa, One&Only Nyungwe House opened its doors last October. The property features 22 luxury rooms and suites situated in five stunning wooden villa clusters, designed using local African craftsmanship inspired by Rwanda.
Ideal for small incentive groups, guests at One&Only Nyungwe House can select from an array of carefully curated immersive experiences, from gastronomic picnics to wild chimpanzee tracking and indigenous open-air spa treatments.
