The Observatory, A Viceroy Resort debuts this week in downtown Ketchum, Idaho, bringing a new mountain retreat with a celestial twist to the Sun Valley region.

Opening its doors on 30 October, the property pairs access to the area’s outdoor adventures with plans for a rooftop observatory that will make Idaho’s night skies a central part of the guest experience.

The resort comprises 73 rooms and suites alongside 12 penthouse residences. Rooms feature natural materials, custom art and floor-to-ceiling windows, while suites add generous living spaces and private balconies.

The rooftop observatory is the property’s standout planned feature. A rotating dome will house a professional-grade 17-inch PlaneWave telescope, with cameras designed to broadcast celestial imagery across the resort.

Programming will reportedly be led by local astronomer and celestial photographer Travis Amick and will include stargazing, private sessions and experiences timed to astronomical events such as meteor showers and planetary alignments.

Dining will centre on Joan, serving American cuisine with local ingredients, alongside all-day café Odin’s Corner and poolside venue Andy’s Watershed, offering cocktails and light bites with a regional focus.

A spa, set to debut at a later date, will feature six treatment rooms, an indoor thermal pool, cold plunge, dry sauna and steam room, with treatments focused on recovery and relaxation after days in the mountains.

For event planners, the resort is also developing a meetings and corporate retreats offering, adding a new option for groups looking to combine time together with Sun Valley’s mountain setting.
