Encore has filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the US, marking a significant moment for the global event production giant following a period of major acquisition activity across the experience and live events sector.
The company announced it has publicly filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission relating to a proposed offering of common stock, with plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ECR.
While Encore has not yet confirmed the size or timing of the offering, reports suggest the company is seeking to raise up to US$500 million.
The move comes less than six months after Encore acquired experiential agency FIRST in a deal designed to strengthen its position in corporate events, brand experiences and embedded event programmes. The acquisition followed Encore’s purchase of UK-based event production specialist Eclipse last November as it continued expanding its production and creative capabilities internationally.
Encore serves as the on-site AV and production partner inside properties operated by Accor, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott.
Speaking at micebook’s US C-Suite Agency Growth Summit in New York earlier this month, Encore president and CEO Ben Erwin described the acquisition of FIRST as part of a broader strategy to expand Encore’s relevance beyond traditional venue-based events.
“We’ll always be proud of hotel ballrooms because so much of our business takes place in them,” he said during a fireside conversation with FIRST CEO Maureen Ryan Fable. “But events are increasingly taking place in lots of other places, and on campus, on premises, increasingly for organisations is important.”
Erwin said FIRST’s embedded and campus event model particularly stood out because of its close relationships with major corporate clients and its experience managing on-site event programmes within company headquarters and office environments.
The comments reflect wider shifts taking place across the global events industry, where agencies and production companies are increasingly investing in integrated capabilities spanning live events, workplace experiences, creative strategy, content and technology.
During the same discussion, Erwin also suggested further consolidation across the sector is likely as clients increasingly look for global scale and simplified procurement models.
“I think you’re going to see a lot more M&A,” he said. “All the big customers want simplicity. They’re going to want buying power. They’re going to want global opportunity to work with somebody.”
Encore, which is backed by private equity firm Blackstone, has grown into one of the largest global players in event technology and production, operating across hotels, convention centres and live event venues worldwide.
The IPO filing comes amid continued investor interest in experience-led businesses and follows a period of accelerated consolidation across the meetings and events sector.
