This week sees a major new hotel debut for London as the highly anticipated Park Hyatt London River Thames opens its doors.

Not only does it mark the first property for Hyatt’s top-tier luxury brand in the UK, but it’s also the first five-star luxury property in the capital’s Nine Elms development and the first new five-star hotel to open south of the river since the Shangri-La at the Shard opened a decade ago.

The lowdown

Designed by architects KPF, Park Hyatt London River Thames occupies the first 18 floors of a striking glass tower overlooking the River Thames. First impressions are that it feels very spacious inside. With its neutral colour scheme and minimalist details, it’s understated luxury rather than over the top opulence.

The hotel offers 203 rooms, including 34 expansive suites, each showcasing river or city views. Floor-to-ceiling windows mean there is plenty of natural light. For those who seek the highest standard of luxury, the hotel’s two exclusive VIP levels feature two Ambassador Suites and one Presidential Suite.

Guests are greeted at reception by Charlie Whinney’s impressive ‘Ebb and Flow’ sculpture, which is inspired by the River Thames and establishes the water theme that runs throughout the 42-storey building. Meanwhile, The Nine Elms Bar & Lounge is illuminated by an installation of 400 tulip shaped bulbs in homage to the area’s history as the site of the New Covent Garden fruit. vegetable and flower market, which moved south of the river from Central London in 1974.

Event spaces

The hotel features an elegant ballroom capable of accommodating up to 610 guests for a reception and 372 banquet-style, with total capacity for 850 guests for a reception when combined with the foyer.

This is complemented by a further seven spaces, catering for a range of event types and group sizes from 12 to 250, with an open kitchen area designed to infuse a touch of culinary theatre into every occasion.

Food & beverage

For dining, Park Hyatt London River Thames will offer two restaurants, with The Nine Elms Kitchen and Terrace opening first and serving an international menu that reflects the diversity of the city’s population today.

The second restaurant, which has yet to be named, will open in early 2025 and specialise in traditional Cantonese cuisine. A patisserie and florist will also open.

The Nine Elms Bar & Lounge, located across from the reception area, celebrates the spirit of London with a thoughtfully curated bar and drinks programme, while TAMISé Wine Library and Tea Lounge features waterfront views, and a wine cellar and tasting room.

Wellness

This is a hotel that takes wellness seriously, with an entire floor dedicated to it. The Spa at Park Hyatt London River Thames boasts a gorgeous 20 by 8 metre indoor pool (far bigger than most hotels) and with natural daylight.

There’s also a large fitness centre including free weights and personal training services, six private treatment rooms where expert therapists craft bespoke experiences tailored to individual needs, and guests can unwind in the riverside relaxation room, which includes innovative Somadome meditation pods that blend technology with serene tranquillity.
