First Event marked Earth Day on 22 April with a coordinated day of volunteering, as part of a wider shift towards embedding sustainability into its operations.

A total of 65 employees took part in activities across West Yorkshire, including street clean-ups with Litter Pick Leeds, refurbishment work at Bradford North Food Bank using repurposed materials from Seagulls, and fundraising for Bradford Neonatal Unit.

The event agency said the initiative reflects a broader move to place sustainability alongside traditional performance measures such as growth and profitability.

The programme follows the company’s introduction of mandatory training through The Carbon Literacy Project for all staff. Since completing the training, the agency has produced its own carbon report, updated its ESG policy and introduced a more structured sustainability strategy.

First Event has also begun working with event:decision to assess the environmental and social impact of its projects. The partnership provides benchmarking across areas including carbon output, social value and governance, with the aim of tracking performance over time.

Matt Grey at event:decision said the approach reflects a growing focus on data-led decision-making within the sector, adding that responsible event delivery is increasingly tied to measurable outcomes rather than “box-ticking”.

The agency acknowledged that international events continue to carry an environmental impact but said the data partnership would support efforts to reduce its footprint in future reporting cycles.

The Earth Day activity forms part of a longer-term ambition to help drive higher sustainability standards across the events industry, with the company calling for greater collaboration between agencies and organisers.

Max, head of tech & innovation and ESG lead at First Event, said the focus now is on embedding sustainability into day-to-day operations rather than treating it as an add-on.
