Edinburgh’s hotel scene is thriving. The city has been ranked the UK’s top hotspot for hotel development in a recent index following a flurry of new openings over the past several years, and it isn’t set to slow down either. Here’s four new 2019 additions worth checking out…
Design Hotels’ first member hotel in Scotland is set to open in Edinburgh this summer. Market Street Hotel is where ‘old meets new’. Situated in the heart of Edinburgh’s city centre on the border of the historic Old Town and connecting New Town, the hotel promises to provide “a unique oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life whilst keeping its finger on the pulse of Edinburgh’s beating heart.” It features 98 boutique-style rooms and suites, as well as an exclusive top floor champagne lounge, offering a creative hub by day, and bustling urban retreat by night against the backdrop of Edinburgh’s iconic skyline.
Moxy Edinburgh Airport
This 230-bedroom property from Marriott’s edgy millennial-focused Moxy Hotels brand claims to bring a playful twist to the traditional airport hotel offering. Guests will find a Hanging Book Installation at the entrance, to promote Edinburgh’s reputation as a literary city. The theme continues throughout the hotel with a Neon Book Seat alongside its Retro Games Arcade. The hotel has the usual funky bar in prime position that doubles as check-in and is the perfect place to mingle with a hand-crafted cocktail. An outdoor seating area is perfect for lounging, while Moxy’s 24/7 B&F (Beverage & Food), smart and fun self-service concept gives guests access to what they want, whenever they want it. All of the guest rooms – there are five styles to choose from – have an Edinburgh mural.
Fingal
The luxury floating hotel opened its doors, or rather decks, at the start of the year, offering 23 beautifully styled cabins, all named after Stevenson lighthouses inspired by Fingal’s rich maritime heritage. Moored up alongside the top visitor attraction, the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith, the 237ft long ship also provides an exciting new events venue for the city. The spectacular double height ballroom seats 80 guests and features a moveable skylight (large enough to lower a car through). The decks are perfect for a Champagne toast or a spot of stargazing while the Lighthouse bar boasts vast floor to ceiling windows which look out on to the striking Port of Leith and the ships that come and go.
Malmaison Hotel
A Grade-A listed building on Edinburgh’s flourishing St. Andrew Square is being transformed into a 72-room hotel run by the Malmaison Hotel Du Vin group. The hotel will also feature the Chez Mal bar and brasserie, as well as the hotels’ ‘work and play’ meeting and events concept. The design will retain many of the building’s period features alongside the hotel group’s unique and stylish appeal. The hotel is set to open this year will be the brand’s second hotel in Edinburgh, following the very first Malmaison hotel which opened 25 years ago.
