2020 has without a doubt been a challenging year for the entire events industry, but we’ve all adapted to our “new normal”. Chetan Shah, micebook CEO and founder, reflects back on the past 12 months and highlights a few of the ways we have adapted to offer new solutions, while looking forward with optimism for 2021…

What a year 2020 has been for the industry and for the micebook team. Throughout the year we have tried to bring best practice sharing to the event community and here are our top 10 achievements in 2020. We hope in some way they have supported the event community:

  1. Arranged Agency Leaders forum that meets monthly to share best practice. If you are an agency leader and want to be involved, then please get in touch here
  2. Launched the micebook voice online forum to share best practice. Join here
  3. Started a Podcast, subscribe here
  4. Held weekly ‘talks’ and extended hybrid events. See our current event programme here
  5. Added the freelancer sector for free on micebook.com. Register here
  6. Held one of the first FAMs to Rome. Article here
  7. Held an early hybrid event at Shangri-La at the Shard. Article here
  8. Added the Virtual sector including Virtual Agencies, Studios, Experiences and Platforms that can all be advanced search to narrow results. List here:
  9. Launched our MICE Influencer programme to fill the gap of FAMs and to help amplify brand experiences. See here
  10. Launched the V Awards celebrating all things Virtual & Hybrid. See here:

Whilst the sector has contracted greatly, and many have lost their livelihoods, there are some positives. We have carved out a new communication channel for clients – virtual and hybrid – and this is being fully owned by the events sector.

Accompanying the current marketing channels e.g. Direct, PR, Advertising, Sponsorship, Hospitality etc, this new channel is here to stay. This is helping the agencies that work in them to a) be able to ride the current storm and retain staff and b) come out stronger with an additional bow to their armoury. The sector will return stronger than ever and will offer more opportunities as well.

The One Industry One Voice and #wecreateexperiences campaign has united so many in the sector and will help drive confidence with corporate buyers and attendees back to live events. It may even have a lasting legacy where the government finally recognises the contribution of the many that work in the sector but are seldom heard.

I hope next year will be a great year for virtual, hybrid and of course for live events, and I also hope that opportunities arise for all those that have lost their roles during the pandemic. We will be working hard to ensure our community is rebuilt. Have a great Christmas and a banging 2021!
