South Bank has always been a part of London that holds that ideal blend of old and new. The cultural infrastructure has been there for decades, such as the National Theatre, the BFI, the Southbank Centre – and the hotel offer has been catching up. H10 London Waterloo, sitting on Waterloo Road opposite St George’s Circus, is part of a more interesting chapter for the neighbourhood.

The building itself is worth a mention before you even get inside. Designed by Maccreanor Lavington Architects and completed in 2009, it won a RIBA award and has since become something of a reference point for mid-rise brick architecture in London. It’s a contemporary building, but one that sits thoughtfully in its Georgian surroundings rather than ignoring them. Part of the Spanish H10 Hotels group, the property has recently undergone a renovation, and across 177 rooms the feel is modern and considered, with large picture windows, wooden floors and city views that get considerably better the higher up you go.

For planners, the event spaces are compact but genuinely well-equipped. There are two dedicated meeting rooms: Oxford Circus, at 80 square metres, which can accommodate up to 60 for a reception or theatre-style, 41 in a classroom layout and 21 boardroom; and Marble Arch, at 53 square metres, which takes up to 25 for a reception or 36 theatre-style. Both rooms have a ceiling height of three metres and come fully equipped with AV and high-speed internet. For larger gatherings, Three O Two Restaurant, the hotel’s all-day dining space, which serves Mediterranean food with a Spanish touch, can be hired exclusively and takes up to 240 for a reception or 120 for a seated banquet, with the added benefit of natural light.

The rooftop is arguably the highlight of this venue. The Waterloo Sky Bar sits on the eighth floor, with an open terrace and views across to the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament and beyond. For a drinks reception with a view, it’s a strong option and the kind of addition that makes a programme feel properly thought through rather than just functional. Waterloo station is a five-minute walk, putting the hotel within easy reach of the Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo and Waterloo and City lines, as well as direct rail connections across the country. For international delegates, London City Airport is around 15 kilometres away. Westminster, the South Bank cultural quarter and the Thames riverside walk are all within easy reach on foot, which makes building an evening programme around the hotel straightforward.
