Sparks, DRPG’s student-focused event fully planned and delivered by the Next Gen Board, returned for its third year at its Hartlebury headquarters on 13 November. Aimed at 18 to 25 year olds, the 2025 edition continued to build momentum as one of the industry’s most accessible entry points for young people exploring careers in creative communications. This year’s programme stayed focused on its core purpose, demystifying the sector and giving attendees a clear sense of the roles, skills and real working environments that shape creative careers.

Around 160 students from colleges and universities across the UK attended, marking an increase on previous years. The day began with a tour of DRPG’s departments, giving delegates a clear sense of the many different teams and roles involved. This was followed by a welcome session introducing the event and the members of the Next Gen Board, along with an explanation of the board’s role in shaping the organisation’s culture and decision-making. As producer Gabriela Ferenc noted, “It’s important to have younger people have an input on the companies, on the industry, and the culture in order to shape it moving forward.”

The superhero-themed programme set the tone for a day of exploration, with workshops such as Heroes of Marketing, Multiverse of Events and AI-Vengers Assemble offering students a closer look at the various departments that are behind DRPG’s work. Sessions combined practical insight with broader conversations about how the industry is evolving. Gabriela highlighted the importance of balancing emerging technologies with creative thinking, observing that while AI is transforming workflows, “none of this is possible without the creative minds that actually drive and create and write the code.”

Breakout sessions encouraged students to experiment, collaborate and build confidence in their own abilities. The aim, as Gabriela explained, is to broaden their understanding of what’s actually possible. “There are so many roles you can try. If you try one and it’s not for you, try again. It’s not a failure, you just build a portfolio of skills.”

Assistant art director and board member Christy Davidson said the experience of helping deliver Sparks has been transformative, both personally and professionally. “This year alone, I’ve done a lot of public speaking. Me in January compared to me today are two different people,” she shared. Being involved at every stage of planning also influenced how she viewed the event itself. “As I’ve been behind this event the whole way through, I’ve got full confidence in myself and in everybody today,” she said, reflecting the sense of ownership and pride felt across the Next Gen board.

After three years, Sparks Live has clearly found its stride. Its mix of peer-led learning, transparent insight and hands-on experience continues to resonate with young creatives. Christy summarised the underlying message simply: “Whatever you want to do, there’s a place for you in the creative communications industry.” It’s clear that with each edition, the event is proving to be a meaningful entry point for the next generation of talent finding their first spark.
