“I think you have to bit a bit crazy to ride horses,” remarked one participant, “but then again, you probably need to be a bit mad to work in events too.”

It’s a sentiment that raised more than a few knowing nods around the group of event profs, as we toasted with a glass of champagne to the day ahead. As an avid horse-rider since early childhood, I practically jumped at the invitation to spend a day with Eventful Riders — the refreshingly offbeat networking group which is bringing together professionals from the events industry who share a love of all things equestrian.

Founded by Cathy Joyce of DMC Advantage, Eventful Riders was created to offer something a little different: a chance for buyers and suppliers to connect over a common interest and a passion for exploring different destinations on horseback. What started as a simple idea has quickly transformed into a full-blown community, gaining over 40,000 followers across Facebook and Instagram in just four months, proof that there’s a growing herd of horsey individuals looking for more meaningful, experience-led ways to meet.

The latest event industry ride took place on July 8th in sunny West Sussex, and was held in collaboration with Rosewood Hotels, welcoming eight riders from DMC Advantage, Rosewood Hotel Group, Lime Blue Solutions, Evolution International, FIRST, Asembl Group, and of course, micebook. After finishing off our drinks, we excitedly got ready to meet our equine partners for the day. Our horses were provided by the fantastic team at Sussex Riding School, an independent gem known for their beach rides, countryside treks and cross-country adventures, they specialise in creating unforgettable riding experiences for groups of all sizes. I was delighted to be paired with Ziggy, a handsome bay gelding with a spring in his step. After getting better acquainted with our mounts, we adjusted stirrups, tightened girths, and set off down the winding country lanes.

What followed was two hours of fresh air, open countryside and some seriously good riding. The sun was shining, the horses were keen, and we happily meandered down the peaceful village lanes before heading onto the vast network of bridlepaths in the area and admiring the views surrounding us. With a group of confident riders, we had plenty of chances to pick up the pace throughout the ride, and it wasn’t long before we were striking off into canter and flying across the fields. Conversations came naturally as we rode, and it didn’t feel at all like structured networking, more like catching up with old friends whilst doing something we all have a genuine passion for. By the time we had dismounted and handed over our reins, everyone was in great spirits and the energy was high. It was the kind of experience that leaves you feeling recharged, connected and already looking forward to the next one.

After such a fantastic ride, the group gathered for a well-earned meal at The Rock Pub, a charming, traditional English country spot with low beams, cosy corners and the kind of menu that hits the spot after a few hours in the saddle. Our lunch was generously sponsored by Lisa Selvin, global director of sales at Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, and it was the perfect way to round off the day, keeping the conversations flowing as we swapped trail stories, shared event industry insights, and caught up on everything in between.

Looking ahead, Eventful Riders is planning another event for September or October, combining more countryside adventures with networking opportunities. There are also plans to host an experienced industry group to join the Common Riding in Scotland next year, which is set to be an unforgettable bucket-list moment.

If you’d like to keep with with all the horsey happenings, Cathy regularly shares her own riding adventures, tales, and trail tips, whilst promoting and organising group rides across England, Ireland and Scotland on the Eventful Riders Facebook and Instagram pages. (@eventful_riders)
