When Dubai first set its sights on Expo 2020 and hinged its ambitious tourism growth plans around it, Mister micebook was just a young lad.
Such has been the build-up to the emirate’s hosting of the global event that it’s time to take a little trip back to familiarise before the crowds arrive next October.
Running from 20 October 2020 until 10 April 2021, the expo promises to deliver ‘a world without borders’ with a flavour of 192 countries to be discovered within the pavilions, more than 200 restaurants and 60 shows a day at the region’s first World Expo and arguably the region’s largest event.
The expo site, which will cover a total of 438 hectares, is located in the Dubai South district, near the Al Maktoum International Airport.
At the heart of Expo 2020, Al Wasl Plaza will feature fountains, waterfalls, parks and palm-lined courtyards, plus a dome set to double up as a 360-degree screen at night, projecting images to thousands of visitors both inside and outside.
Each participating country will have its own pavilion, while there will also be a pavilion for each of the main themes – sustainability, mobility and opportunity.
Unsurprisingly in the build up to such a major event, the emirate’s hotel stock has once again been on the rise. First stop is the Emirates Hills for a peek at the Vida The Hills, before venturing on to the utterly decadent Mandarin Oriental.
On the horizon, Andaz Dubai The Palm is set to open at the end of the year, along with Taj on the Palm by Taj Hotels, the Waldorf Astoria, Radisson Damac Hills and the contemporary ME Dubai.
