Every year Lonely Planet lists the hottest must-visit destinations, and in 2019, Copenhagen comes out on top as the number one in the city destination category. And Global DMC Partners and DMC Nordic could not agree more! Here’s their lowdown on why #eventprofs should check out the Danish capital this year…

A lot is happening in Copenhagen right now, and it makes the city an extra exciting destination to visit. On the food scene, noma has reopened and is once again serving exceptional and inspiring food. At the same time, new food markets and casual dining hotspots are popping up all over the city. Innovative design, green oases and clean waters make Copenhagen a sublime place to live and to visit. Copenhagen is a great place to visit all-year round, and Tivoli Gardens’ recent winter opening has made a winter trip to Copenhagen even more exciting.

Copenhagen’s frontrunner position when it comes to food, sustainability, design and as an all-year destination are among the reasons why the city has been chosen as #1 City Best in Travel 2019.

Gastronomy
When it comes to great food, Copenhagen is the place to be. The city’s menu spans all the way from world-class Michelin starred dining to flavourful street food at the city’s many food markets. The fine dining scene was taken to a new level when noma reopened with a new seasonal concept last February. From its new location in the old, industrial neighbourhood Refshaleøen, noma is now back to serving exceptional and inspiring food based on Scandinavian and seasonal ingredients.

In 2018, the food market scene in Copenhagen also experienced a boom. New markets opened on Refshaleøen and by the Inner Harbour Bridge, while neighbourhoods like Nørrebro and the Meatpacking district also offer tons of great, casual dining experiences. In Copenhagen, you can try the traditional Danish cuisine and you can eat your way around the globe, but one thing is for sure – you will not be hungry when you leave.

Sustainability
Copenhagen is truly a green city. It is surrounded by water, filled with parks and has climate-friendly citizens to match. In 2014, Copenhagen was chosen has European Green Capital, but that has not lowered the city’s ambitions. The aim for the city of Copenhagen is to become the world’s first CO2 neutral capital by 2025.

Experience it for yourself. Swim in the clean waters of the city’s harbour baths, stay in a sustainable hotel, eat organic, visit an urban farm and ride the electric city bikes around the old maritime city. In Copenhagen, everything is close together and there is no part of the city that you cannot reach on a bike.

Water, light, open spaces, sustainability and quality of life are the key elements in the capital’s architectural development and Copenhagen is constantly preparing for a more sustainable future for example with the new waste-to-energy plant Amager Bakke and with well-designed bicycle infrastructure. A lot of initiatives have already been launched, and plenty more will come. All contributing to making Copenhagen a green frontrunner.

Design
Copenhagen has quite a history when it comes to design. World renowned Danish designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner and Finn Juhl have influenced design all over the world as well as in Copenhagen.

Today, new and exciting design mixes in with the modernistic classics. Even the city’s many great restaurants are marked by the love for inspiring design and restaurants like Kadeau and noma take restaurant interior to a new level.

All over the city, talented designers lead the way with innovative takes on interior, fashion, architecture and much more. Stroll through the city and pop into the many shops, showrooms and workshops where creators make great ideas come alive through high quality craftsmanship. Whether you are into classics or something new and trend-setting, you are bound to find something that will make your Copenhagen visit one to remember.

Winter/Tivoli
In 2018, Tivoli added a winter season to its annual calendar. Now, locals and visitors alike have yet another chance to explore their favourite fairytale garden – this time filled with jolly snowmen, covered in beautiful lights and glistering with ice crystals. You can go skating on the new ice rink in front of Nimb, rest your feet on one of the many rides and enjoy a hot drink in the historic surroundings.

The new Tivoli season proves that Copenhagen is far from a one-season destination. All year round, there is plenty to experience in Copenhagen. In the colder months, Copenhagen is transformed into a winter wonderland with exciting festivals, glowing light installations throughout the city and lots of “hygge” in the many cafés.

Art/culture
Experiences filled with art and culture are waiting all over Copenhagen. From the small, independent galleries to the magnificent museums. You can rediscover the world-renowned classics or maybe find a new favourite. At Copenhagen’s many museums, you can explore the works of both Danish and international artists.

You can immerse yourself in art –  from the ancient times to the most ground-breaking new. Or take a stroll through the historic Copenhagen and have a look into some of the beautiful palaces and churches that all tell stories about Copenhagen and the city’s inspiring past.
