We’re headed to the Bavarian Alps this week for the 2024 nineteen agency leaders retreat, so for our Venue of the Week, we’re shining the spotlight on our stunning host property, Schloss Elmau.

The lowdown

Located high in the mountains right on the border between Austria and Bavaria, just over an hour from Munich, the luxurious property features two hotels – the Hideaway and Retreat – eight restaurants, six spas, two gyms, a yoga pavilion, two wine cellars, a concert hall, two libraries and cosy lounges and spectacular views aplenty.

Winner of multiple awards (including Condé Nast Gold List Best Hotels of the World 2024) and one of few hotels to have hosted the G7 twice – in 2015 and 2022 – Schloss Elmau is set amidst the beautiful and varied landscapes of the Alps, surrounded by majestic mountains, crystal-clear lakes, wild forests, rushing streams and jaw dropping canyons.

Schloss Elmau was originally built from 1914 to 1916 by the philosopher Dr. Johannes Mueller, destroyed by a fire in 2005, and rebuilt in 2007 by his grandson Dietmar Mueller-Elmau with 115 spacious rooms and suites as a luxury spa and cultural Hideaway. The Retreat was built in 2015 and is located 150 meters west of the Hideaway offering 47 spacious suites with breathtaking views of the majestic Wetterstein Mountains and rushing Ferchenbach stream.

Meetings and incentives

Schloss Elmau is not only an ideal venue for G7 Summits, but also for exclusive meetings, incentives, events, celebrations, corporate retreats, meetings, presentations, and conferences. The Retreat and the Hideaway can be booked exclusively either individually or together.

In addition to the impressive concert hall, which can host 200 for a banquet or 300 theatre-style, the property offers an array of spaces for events from intimate boardrooms to larger spaces such as Pavilion Retreat for up to 120 theatre-style and the many restaurants, which can be booked for private hire. These include Summit Retreat, accommodating up to 32, and Fidelio Hideaway, which can cater for 150 for a banquet.

For incentive groups, the surrounding Elmau Valley lends itself well to outdoor activities, and the opportunities for groups are almost endless. In the summer months, there’s tennis, horse-riding, wild swimming, mountain biking, golf, archery, hiking, yoga for all levels and more. During the winter, Schloss Elmau turns into a winter wonderland, with cross-country skiing, hiking and snow biking, snowshoe adventure, tobogganing and ice skating on offer.

For groups that want to relax, the main Badhaus Spa alone (one of the six spas) is spread over three storeys in the Hideaway and includes multiple pools and 17 treatment rooms. The Oriental Hammam claims to be the largest and most stunning Hamam West of Istanbul celebrating oriental design and ancient 200-million-year-old Bavarian Jurassic stone. It features three large dome rooms with hot stones and water tubs, four treatment rooms, two steam baths, chaise longues to relax and an oriental tea lounge.

Dining

With eight restaurants to choose from, groups can dine in a multiple settings, including La Salle serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Executive Chef Christoph Rainer has created a tempting menu of French and Japanese cuisine for the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, IKIGAI, which has two Michelin stars. At Summit@Retreat, inspired by the grandeur of the mountains, Chef Philipp Schlosshauer and his culinary team curate a natural cuisine for cosmopolitan tastes, using only the finest regional ingredients.

The cosy Kaminstube with its comfortable alcoves and open fireplace is the perfect place to enjoy a good fondue. During the summer months, it features terrace seating facing the inner courtyard.

Situated in the tranquil surroundings of the Badehouse Spa, Ananda offers a quiet setting for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and on some evenings, an intimate dinner of Asian specialties, while guests can enjoy Bavarian Snacks and breathtaking views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains at Elmauer Alm, located 1200 m above sea level.
