InterContinental Barcelona has quietly rebuilt its meetings and events offering in a way that matters to planners. Following a full renovation of its conference floors, the hotel now presents itself as one of the strongest large-scale MICE venues in the city, combining space, light and infrastructure with the credibility of a globally recognised brand. The refurbishment, backed by an investment of more than two million euros, covers over 3,000 sqm of event space and focuses on practical improvements that directly affect the delegate experience. New ‘scenic windows’ introduce natural-style lighting across several rooms, changing the feel of the spaces and addressing one of the more persistent challenges of hotel conferencing. The result is a series of rooms that feel open and energised rather than enclosed and functional.
At the centre of the upgrade sits the Verdi Ballroom, now the largest in central Barcelona. With almost 800 sqm of open-plan space and a screen stretching more than twelve metres wide, the room is clearly made for show-stopping events. Conferences with scale, corporate launches and awards evenings will all be welcome here, while the reworked layout allows for flexibility across different event formats. The space retains a sense of theatre expected of a flagship ballroom but avoids the heavy, dated atmosphere that often accompanies rooms of this size. The supporting spaces have been treated with equal attention. The Rossini and Vivaldi rooms operate as natural breakouts from Verdi, with a direct flow to the hotel’s garden terrace, adding valuable breakout and networking potential. The terrace itself gives planners an outdoor option without leaving the venue, particularly useful for pre-dinner drinks or informal sessions between meetings.

The second conference level introduces nearly 1,000 sqm more event space, spread across eight fully renovated meeting rooms. Rubí and Zafir mirror the daylight-driven design approach of the main floor, ensuring consistency across both levels. All 22 meeting rooms across the property are now completely soundproofed and positioned to shift easily between different capacities and layouts. Infrastructure upgrades have also been addressed alongside the design. The hotel now operates with 5G connectivity, modernised AV support and digital signage throughout the event floors, removing many of the technical friction points planners typically face. Sustainability also forms part of the renovation with a greater emphasis on locally sourced catering and food waste reduction, reflecting an operational shift rather than a surface-level statement.
On the accommodation and experience side, the hotel’s Montjuïc location gives delegates a calmer setting without losing proximity to the city. Views across to the National Art Museum of Catalonia reinforce its sense of place, while the on-site dining offer adds a genuine layer of appeal for hosted events. QUIRAT, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, anchors the food offering alongside more relaxed venues and a rooftop terrace that transitions naturally into casual networking as the day closes. InterContinental Barcelona has not merely updated its meeting rooms. The hotel has repositioned itself as a venue capable of hosting major events with confidence, clarity and consistency. For planners seeking a central European city destination with scale and polish, it is certainly one to have on your radar.
