Brandfuel has sadly announced the death of founder and Chairman David Ball, who died aged 64 on Saturday after several months of treatment for cancer.

In a statement of LinkedIn, the agency said: “It is hard to overestimate David’s impact in the events industry: not only did he found Brandfuel in December 2004 (then known as Sprout), he grew it into one of the UK’s leading experiential agencies, with a client list and trophy cabinet to match.

“He was respected as an authoritative voice within the sector, judging many awards schemes and moderating many industry panels, which meant his diary was always bursting with invitations. The agency David founded is imbued with a formidable sense of corporate responsibility; it is always keen to offer expertise and guidance to charities and organisations that tackle the world’s problems head-on.

“Working with clients such as One Young World, the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, BGC, and STORM meant so much to David. Over the years, he also supported many charities in a personal capacity and encouraged his colleagues, the Fuellers, to do the same. David was always keen to develop individuals and introduce them to the world of events; he had a very big heart and it was not within his skillset to say “no”.

“Though David usually shunned pride, he allowed himself one exception: he was the only athlete ever to represent both Great Britain and Jamaica in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Long Distance Championships.”

Throughout Brandfuel’s 20-year history (Sprout was renamed in April 2005), David has been supported by Sue Sawyer, his co-founder and CEO, and Michael Mitchell, finance director.

Now with a staff of 75-plus, Brandfuel has been focusing on the next phase of its development, with a growing majority of its work undertaken overseas. Sue and Michael are keen to fulfil the goals they mapped out alongside David, as well as other projects that are in progress.

“It has been an absolute privilege to work with David creating the impressive agency that Brandfuel has become over the past 20 years,” said Sue. “We are devastated by his loss and will do our utmost to continue to build on his huge achievements in the months ahead.”
