Oceandiva London, the new sustainable events vessel on the river Thames operated by hospitality and events company Smart Group, sustained damage during tests last Thursday which resulted in its first planned industry event this week being moved to a different venue at the last minute.
The £25m Oceandiva London was due to host The Meetings Show’s Hosted Buyers Welcome Reception on Tuesday (27 June), but the incident last week has meant it has not been possible for the vessel to complete its Maritime Coastguard Authority (MCA) testing.
“So instead, and like true event professionals, the team has pulled out all the stops to score a fantastic game-winning alternative,” said Jack Marczewski, portfolio event director, The Meetings Show, TEAMS Europe and Business Travel Show Europe. The Meetings Show Hosted Buyers Reception is taking place at TOCA Social instead.
Greg Lawson, CEO of Smart Group, explained in a statement that Oceandiva London was undertaking a manoeuvre on the river Thames during which a technical issue led to the vessel making contact with the heavy anchor chain of a moored un-manned barge. This incident resulted in superficial damage to the exterior of the vessel and the decision was taken to change the venue for Hosted Buyer’s Reception.
“We can confirm that no one was injured during the incident and that the vessel has now returned safely to its berth at Royal Docks. The safety and security of the vessel, its crew, and other river users is paramount, and we are working with the MCA to take the testing through to completion.”
He continued: “We’d like to thank our clients, suppliers, venues and friends for their unwavering loyalty and understanding. We look forward to welcoming everyone on board Oceandiva London in the coming months.”
