To celebrate US borders reopening to UK travellers on Monday, BA and Virgin put aside rivalries to perform their first ever dual take off to New York. So, we thought now was the perfect time to shine the spotlight on the very latest and upcoming openings and refurbishments in the Big Apple.

Aman New York
This long-awaited property from uber luxury brand Aman still doesn’t have an opening date, but the website states that it will open in 2021. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, this urban sanctuary is in the iconic Crown building – formerly the first home of Museum of Modern Art – at the prestigious address of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street. The 83-room property will boast a dramatic double-height Sky Lobby, 10th-floor wraparound Garden Terrace, which will feature a bar with sweeping views of Central Park, a Cigar Bar, and year-round dining, private members club, three-floor Aman Spa, Jazz Club and Wine Room.
Not a new opening, but The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel has completed a three-year transformation, debuting a new restaurant, reimagined guest rooms, the Presidential Suite encompassing the entire 26th floor, as well as Valmont at The Carlyle, the only New York spa by the luxury Swiss skincare brand.
Dowling’s at The Carlyle is named after former owner of the hotel Robert Whittle Dowling, an influential urban planner committed to revitalising the city. The decor will pay tribute to the 1930s and 40s through historic artwork and five newly acquired Ludwig Bemelmans paintings. Newly appointed Executive Chef Sylvain Delpique has created a menu that features his interpretations of timeless New York favourites and throwback dishes from another era.
Ace Hotel Brooklyn
The Ace Hotel Brooklyn recently opened in Boerum Hill on the cusp of Downtown Brooklyn. The lobby features vintage and custom seating for guests and locals, half-moon windows, lots of natural light, and artworks by Verdan Jakšić.
The 287 rooms feature custom furniture, minimalist fixtures, original artwork by local fibre and textile artists and floor-to-ceiling windows – with some higher floors offering a 360º panorama of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and the Statue of Liberty. And, like other Ace Hotel, guest rooms also include D’Angelico Guitars, Music Hall turntables, and vinyl record selections from Rough Trade. Planners can choose from a variety of creative and flexible event spaces including The Studio, The Gallery and The Stoop.
Hard Rock Hotel New York
The highly anticipated Hard Rock Hotel New York is nearing completion in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, and now accepting reservations for its official debut in April 2022 and beyond. Gracing the iconic skyline at 159 West 48th Street, steps from Times Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue shopping, the newly constructed hotel will feature 446 rooms and suites.
Culinary concepts will the upscale NYY Steak, in partnership with the New York Yankees and RT60 Rooftop bar, offering crafted cocktails and shareable bites.
From day to night, the brand’s signature Sessions Restaurant & Bar offer live, unplugged musical performances, while The Venue on Music Row can accommodate 400 guests for gala dinners and celebrations.
Six Senses New York
Set to open in 2022 Six Senses New York will mark the brand’s debut in North America. The new hotel will be a key element of The XI – two unique, twisting towers designed by world-renowned architect Bjarke Ingels, located between Manhattan’s Hudson River and The High Line.
Its 137 rooms, spread across 10 storeys, sit in the East Tower offering up views over the High Line, the river, and Downtown and Midtown’s skyscrapers. Two restaurants showcase the brand’s popular culinary approach to wellness, and the Six Senses Spa will introduce a new direction of wellness treatments. The hotel aims to become LEED-certified.
